twillingate newfoundland canada
this is a pretty typical view of a newfoundland outport.
newfoundland was settled by fishermen who predominantly originated from the west of england and southern part of ireland. hundreds of years ago these fishermen used to travel to the grand banks off newfoundland for the cod fishing season. over time some of them settled, typically on small off-shore islands or close to harbours along newfoundland's shoreline. to this day most of newfoundland's ~500,000 people live clustered along the edges of the province, with very few settlements - and almost no roads - in the centre of the 108,860 km sq (41,700 sq mi) island.
