Greenhouses in Hveragerði

Posted by baobab (Cambridge, United States) on 27 December 2008 in Business & Industry.

the ghostly glow in the sky above Hveragerði wasn't due to the sun, which was still well below the horizon, but greenhouses. Hveragerði is a hive of geothermal activity which has been harnessed to provide the power to grow fruits and vegetables year-round. there has been recent activity in the area which opened up new vents - one can see some plumes of steam lit up in this image.

this isn't a technically perfect image - it was taken from a moving vehicle through a snowstorm the morning that we arrived, but there's something about it that I like: the glowing lights, point of focus, motion blur, steam, blue backdrop of twilit snow, and spindly trees against the lights. suitably surreal after a sleepless night marking the shift from a more ordinary climate into Iceland's deep winter.
