10 am Twilight above Hveragerði

the thought of visiting Iceland has fascinated me for years. my interest was egged on by dj.tigersprout's earlier trips to Iceland and Alaska. when an opportunity to travel there over the winter solstice arose I jumped at the chance.

Iceland is a long way north and has only a few hours of daylight in the depths of winter. in the hours around daylight there is a gradual ghostly twilight which takes on many shades of blue. with a thick blanket of snow on the ground it feels entirely surreal, as if one is walking in nothingness.

daylight on December 20th was only seconds longer than the solstice, December 21st: on December 20th the sun rose above the horizon at 11:22 am and set at 3:29 pm. this shot was taken above Hveragerði at 10:08 am.
