Splashdown

strait of juan de fuca british columbia canada

this was a lucky shot - two orcas leaped at once, and I caught the second one splashing down amidst the spray caused by her companion.

this is also an example of the d300's great capabilities and the trade off for those. it was a brilliantly lit afternoon with strong sunshine and deep shadows, so I used the d300's active d-lighting option. this automatically adjusts the contrast in a shot to obtain the best dynamic range... however the trade off is that there is a slight delay in setting up the shot and so although I pressed the release while the whale was completely out of the water, the few moments the camera took to adjust its settings meant that she had already touched down when the picture was shot.

I liked the shot anyway since it's rare to capture the rear 2/3 of the animal up in the air :)
