FinPosted by baobab (Cambridge, United States) on 1 October 2008 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio. strait of juan de fuca british columbia canada male orcas have dorsal fins that reach up to 1.8 m (6 feet) in height, and orcas typically have paler saddle patches near these fins. this group of orcas was very comfortable with the whale watchers and went right up to the zodiacs several times (though keeping slightly further from the bigger boats - both a local law and the orcas' preference, I think). zodiac riders got the treat of having an animal as large as their vessel swimming right up alongside them... despite their reputation as killer whales, wild orcas show little aggression toward humans. they are extremely intelligent and don't seem to do their most dramatic leaps next to the boats, which would capsize them... though they will jump on seals! --- we live in a beautiful world --- your feedback and suggestions are always appreciated - thanks for visiting
